11 YR Old Girl Bullied For Her Dark Skin Uses Twitter To Fight Back
Last week news broke of a stunning 11yr old girl from South Los Angeles who has been bullied for having dark skin. In an interview with CBSLA.com Kheris Rogers shared her story making the point that she knew deep down that her beauty was beyond what others would say it is.
she said “I know I’m pretty I’m not gonna let anyone tell me different,” she says. But prior to that she felt differently, she used to feel unpretty.
“I just didn’t feel I was that pretty. I thought it was really ugly, people telling me it was ugly.” Kheris added: “I felt like they were bullying me because of my skin color because I was darker.”
Taylor, who is Kheris's older sister said she noticed that her younger sister was being bullied in elementary school specifically in a class that had only four other black girls.
“She started to notice she was different,” she said. “She would cry a lot, and talk about how she doesn’t like her skin tone.”
Kheris also shared a story where in first grade she was asked to create a picture of herself and was handed a black crayon to do it. She refused the black crayon letting the teacher know that she was not that dark.
“I’m not that dark… I’m brown,”
A year later her mom decided to move her to a more diverse school and the bullying slowed down but it never completely stopped. At that school, the bullying came from other black students which was surprising to Kheris's family.
Instead of running away from the situation Kheris decided it was time to fight back and she used social media, specifically Twitter to do it. Her goal is to speak positive affirmations about herself and spread positivity in any way she can.
